About Auto Electrical Relays

Auto electrical relays are used to provide remote switching of automotive electrical circuit loads.

Auto electrical switching relays have a low current electrical input signal (at rated voltage) connected to an electromagnetic coil circuit which connects to from a switch or electrical component.

The signal circuit may be +ve power input and -ve switched control (typical for computer controlled circuits)
or -ve input and positive power switched.

Auto electrical switching relays have a load circuit to switch higher current loads between load input (typically terminal 30) and load output terminals (typically terminals 87 or 87a).

Automotive relay cost

Relays are individually priced see items. Labour cost for changing car relays depends on accessibility and location.

Car Relay Checks

Car relays can be checked using a multimeter to measure

  • Relay coil circuit resistance continuity (Ohms) between pins 85 and 86 or alternatively pins 1 and 2
  • Voltage signals
  • Voltage drop across relay switching contacts pins 30 and 87 for circuit under load.
